Nyandeni

Libode, 30km east of Mthatha, is the main town in the Nyandeni local municipality. The village of Ngqeleni is some 10km outside of Mthatha. The Royal House of the amaMpondo, the palace of the late Paramount Chief Tutor Ndamase, is in Nyandeni. Look out for Mlengana Mountain (incorrectly named Execution Rock), near Libode, a great mountain looming above the Tutor Ndamase Pass.

The Mlengana Mountain is located near Libode. Some legends have it that this mountain was used as a place of execution. However, the real Rock of Execution from which the condemned were flung to their death is located nearby. According to ancient amaMpondo history, when Faku the legendary king executed his enemies at (or near) Mlengana Rock overlooking the Umngazi River valley, their blood, or “igazi”, flowed into the waters.
